Pursuing MPhil/PhD Programmes at Lingnan University


 Attractive PhD fellowship scheme that the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong has established, i.e. Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS). The Scheme is aimed at attracting the best and brightest students from around the world to come for PhD studies in Hong Kong, and I hope to have one of yours pursuing this degree with us at Lingnan. Each Fellowship awardee will be provided with a monthly stipend of HK$27,100* (US$1=HK$7.8) and a conference/research-related travel allowance of up to HK$13,600* per year for a maximum period of three years by the RGC. 

In addition, the full tuition fee for a Fellowship awardee will be waived by Lingnan for his/her first year of study. For an awardee with a normative study period of four years, the University will offer the same level of Fellowship and conference/research-related travel allowance for his/her fourth year of study. The intention is to make this Scheme prestigious and highly international.

    Lingnan, a global leader in quality education and high impact research, is Hong Kong’s liberal arts university which is ranked 3rd globally for “Quality Education” for two consecutive years in the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings 2021 and 2022. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise 2020 conducted by the University Grants Committee, Lingnan’s research in humanities, business and social sciences was classified as “World Leading” (4 star) and “Internationally Excellent” (3 star); while some research disciplines under business and social sciences also came 1st or 2nd among all public universities in Hong Kong in terms of the percentage of “World Leading” research work. Besides, it is accredited as a Five Stars Institution by The QS Intelligence Unit in 2020, and has received the maximum five stars in seven areas including “Teaching”, “Employability”, “Research”, “Internationalisation”, “Facilities”, “Arts and Culture”, and “Inclusiveness”. The University offers MPhil and/or PhD programmes in the Arts, Business, Science and Social Sciences disciplines.     To offer more diversified learning opportunities, especially for interdisciplinary research studies, Lingnan has been offering a number of full-time PhD programmes in collaboration with Mainland universities since the 2021-22 academic year. Applicants may seek admission to our PhD programmes in two ways as follows:

Ÿ   Apply via the HKPFS+ during the period from 1 September to 1 December 2022 (Hong Kong Time 12:00 noon). Applicants who apply for and do not get the Fellowship can still be considered for the regular PhD places at Lingnan.

Ÿ   Apply to the University directly~ from 1 November 2022 to 20 January 2023. Normally, full-time PhD students will be awarded full Postgraduate Studentships. In 2022-23, the full monthly stipend is HK$18,170*# before confirmation of candidature and HK$18,520*# after confirmation of candidature.

We also have popular research-based 2-year MPhil programmes. Applicants may apply for admission to our MPhil programmes directly from 1 November 2022 to 20 January 2023. Full-time MPhil students will normally be awarded Postgraduate Studentships as well. In 2022-23, the full monthly stipend is HK$17,910*#.

*Amount subjects to annual review.

#The University may also award a partial studentship which is a fraction of the amount for a full studentship to students.
